C.A. Johnson broke the hold of girls basketball futility last season - winning its first ever region championship, earning a home playoff game for the first time and bagging a playoff win for the first time.
The Green Hornets hope to take it a little further this time around. CAJ capped the Region 3-1A campaign with a perfect 10-0 record, which was another first for the program – an unblemished conference report card.
Tonight, C.A. Johnson (12-9) opens the 1A state playoffs against Ridge Spring-Monetta again. The Green Hornets defeated the Trojans 53-45 a year ago for the program’s first playoff success. The fun ended with a loss to Christ Church in the second round of the Upper State bracket.
Pressure defense and balanced individual production are the Green Hornet calling cards.
CAJ sported a 28.2 point-per-game defensive average in region play after facing a challenging non-region schedule that included two dates against both Dreher (No. 1 in 3A) and Columbia (No. 3 in 2A).
Nakia Owens (8.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg), 2.4 apg, 5.4 spg), Deja Smith (8.6 ppg, 14.3 rpg, 3.9 apg, 4.2 spg), Andrea Moye (6.0 ppg, 9.4 rpg), Logan Furtick (7.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.3 apg, 7.7 spg) and Shatavia Flowers (3.1 ppg, 17.0 rpg) are the key players for CAJ.
