Ridge View is still alive in the Class 4A state girls basketball playoffs. The darkhorse Blazers, who entered the postseason as the No. 4 seed out of Region 4, moved on to the third round for the first time in program history thanks to a rousing 77-54 win over Region 8 champion Summerville on Friday.
The Blazers (20-6) have another long trip to the Lowcountry on tap Monday to face familiar foe Goose Creek. The Gators opened the 2011 big-school playoffs with a win over Ridge View on the way to their second straight Lower State championship.
Ridge View established the tome early at Summerville, racing to a 24-16 lead by the end of the first quarter, and then decked the Green Wave with a 43-20 under in the two middle periods.
As usual, Alexus Jackson and Nakia Squire were the Blazer headliners. Jackson rang up 22 points on 10-for-16 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds for her second consecutive playoff double double. The junior center had 17 points and 16 boards in a first-round road win at Sumter. Squire had 17 points. Five rebounds, five steals and eight assists. Victoria Marshall also had a double double with 12 points and 10 assists. Jontay Mitcham 11 points, six boards and four steals to the cause.
