Chapin headlines the Midlands story at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament this weekend at Civic Center of Anderson.
Chapin earned 11 of the 20 state spots earned by area entries at the Lower State qualifer last week. The Eagles have more qualifiers than any other Midlands program in any classification.
Scott Swindell is the only returning state champion in the group. The senior standout prevailed at 152 pounds a year ago after finishing fourth at the same weight as a sophomore, and he enters ranked No. 1 at 160 by scmat.com. Swindell brings a 51-1 senior record to the tourney.
The Eagle contingent also features seniors Forest Touchberry (21-4 at 138), Chase Owens (45-4 at 152), Devin Lawrence (44-6 at 170), Cody Brundage (54-2 at 182), Ryan Moore (34-8 at 195), Brandon Owens (45-9 at 220) and Adam Taylor (49-5 at 285).
Chase Owens is a two-time state place finisher, including a consolation title at 140 a year ago. Lawrence was the silver medallist at 171. Brundage, who set a program single-season pin record, is a two-time qualifier and a fourth-place man at 145 as a sophomore. Brandon Owens and Taylor qualified a year ago, but did not place.
Freshman George Dreher (27-12 at 106), junior Chandler Owens (38-12 at 126) and junior Chad Swindell (20-9 at 145) – all first-time qualifiers – round out the list.
Dreher sends four to state, including two-time qualifying junior Chris Bloch at 145 pounds. Block is out to crack the top four for the first time. He is joined by 2011 state qualifiers Derrick Frazier at 113, senior Sheldon Melvin at 126 and first-time qualifier senior Artemas Corbett at 152.
Sophomore Joshua Thomas (132) and senior heavyweight Christopher Martin are the Camden qualifiers.
Brookland-Cayce junior Chris Lott (160), Airport senior Antoine Kelly (170) and A.C. Flora junior Donato Pelzer (220) round out the local cast. Kelley is a two-time qualifier who is looking to place for the first time. Pelzer enters with a 24-8 record with 19 pins.
