Blythewood’s Brandon Burris was named the most valuable player at the Red Bank Invitational (RBI) baseball tournament last week at White Knoll.
Teammates Thomas Bessinger and Zach Hamilton also made the all-tournament team while helping the Bengals go 3-0 and defeat Carrollton County (GA) 9-3 in the tournament championship game on Saturday.
Blythewood reached the tournament title game with wins over Airport (7-2) and Dorman (2-0). The Bengals open regular season and Region 4-4A play on Tuesday at home against Spring Valley.
The Vikings went 2-1 at the RBI under new coach Collin Liggett, losing only to Carrollton County (GA). SV opened the tourney with an 8-1 win over Fort Dorchester and closed it on Sunday with a 26-11 rout of Airport. Trey Dent and Austin Hill earned all-tournament recognition.
Host White Knoll went 3-0 in their debut under former Sumter coach Brooks Shumake, but had to settle for a third-place finish. The Timberwolves beat Dorman (8-7), Airport (8-3) and Fort Dorchester (13-3) along the way. Trevor Bradley and Carl Wise made the all-tournament team. WK opens the regular season and the Region 5-4A campaign on Tuesday at home against Aiken.
Airport had a rough debut under new coach Tim Perry, going 0-3. Austin Hawley did earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
