Hammond defeated Richland Northeast 6-2 in the final game of the South Carolina Diamond Invitational spring break baseball tournament on Sunday at Blythewood. The win netted the SCISA Skyhawks a fifth place finish and a 2-2 tournament record. Both SCDI wins came against High School League Class 4A foes.
Alexander Daniels and Jake Nidiffer were the hitting stars for Hammond. Daniels had a RBI single in the first and a two-run single to start a decisive five-run rally in the third. Nidiffer capped the big move in the third inning with a booming two-run triple.
Jae Roberts was the winning pitcher for Hammond with relief help from McNair Coleman and Grant Hensley. The three Skyhawk hurlers combined for a four-hitter.
Shannon Glover had two of the four hits by RNE, which closed with a 1-3 tournament record.
Daniels earned a spot on the all-tournament team with an impressive offensive showing. In four games, the junior catcher-DH hit .600 (9-for-15) with nine RBIs.
