Chapin’s baseball and softball teams have just one option on Monday in the Class 3A Lower State playoffs. The Eagles either win tonight, or close the book on the season.
Jason Jolley’s softball team (23-4) suffered a frustrating, 1-0 loss in the first round at Georgetown on Saturday, and hosts St. James in an elimination game. St. James took a 9-3 loss against Hartsville on Saturday.
Eagles ace Taylor Morgan and Georgetown star Taylor Mercer engaged in a stellar pitching duel. Morgan allowed only three hits, but one was a double in the bottom of the seventh inning that produced the only run of the game. Mercer allowed five hits but no runs on the way to her 20th win of the season.
Morgan and Whitley Martin had two hits apiece for Chapin.
Scott McLeod’s baseball squad (20-5) was dealt a 10-2 loss at home in the first round by defending state champion St. James, and faces a long road trip to face Berkeley for a do-or-die confrontation. Berkeley dropped a 3-1 decision to A.C. Flora.
