Gilbert’s baseball and softball teams host second-round games in the Class 2A Upper State tournament on Monday with the chance to advance to the championship round as the unbeaten team.
In baseball, the Indians (26-2) take on Palmetto at 6:30 p.m. after scoring a 12-6 win at Pendleton in Saturday’s first-round game. The Gilbert softball team (24-4) faces traditional power Crescent at 6 p.m.
Gilbert wasted little time jumping on the host Mustangs in the US opener, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. Austin LaBounty got things going with a two-RBI single and Dour Moyer later added another two-run single. Mike Morrison and Mitch Spires also had RBI singles in the big frame.
After Pendleton pulled within 6-4, the Tribe put it away with four runs in the fifth inning. Shirley and Spires did the honors with two-run singles. Connor Owings closed out the Gilbert scoring with a two-run home run in the sixth.
LaBounty was the starter, but struggled and left after 2.1 innings. Vic Burkett, who worked two innings in relief, picked up the win, and Owings pitched the final 2.2 innings to earn a save. Owings fanned four of the eight Pendleton batters he faced.
Gilbert (24-4) opened the Upper State softball tournament with a win for the second year in a row, nipping Palmetto 2-1 on Saturday. Gabby Keisler’s two-out single in the top of the first inning got things starter. Kelli Shealy followed with a double to right-center field to score courtesy runner Hannah Bumgarner. Shealy later raced home with what proved to be the decisive run on a wild pitch.
Palmetto’s one run off Lyndie Dorgan came in the third inning. Dorgan, who is 15-0 in the circle. faced a major threat in the bottom of the seventh inning, but escaped the jam without incident. Palmetto’s first two runners reached base, and both moved up on a sacrifice bunt – putting runners on second and third base with one out. Dorgan, however, retired the next two Mustang hitters to close it out.
