Notebook: SCISA soccer playoffs underway

The top-ranked, defending champion Cardinal Newman boys open with big win on Monday, as does second-ranked Hammond. The girls title drive begins tonight. CN and Heathwood Hall host first-round matches.

Top-ranked, defending champion Cardinal Newman opened the SCISA Class 3A boys soccer playoffs on Monday with a 9-2 first-round rout on Hilton Head Prep.

Nestor Jaramillo led the way for the 17-4 Cardinals with four goals, and Koty Millard added two tallies to the CN cause. Jack Sicker, Charlie Terenni, Andrew Wilczewski and Andrew Spencer also found the back of the net for the Cards.

Cardinal Newman hosts Pinewood Prep in a semifinal match on Wednesday at George Watson Field.

In other area action, second-ranked Hammond breezed by Florence Christian 7-0 at home, but Heathwood Hall’s season came to a end in a tough, 2-1 road loss at Porter-Gaud.

Hammond hosts Porter-Gaud in the other semifinal match on Wednesday.

The SCISA Class 3A girls soccer playoffs begin tonight.

Hammond may be ranked No. 2 behind Cardinal Newman in the SCHSSCA poll, but Skyhawks and Heathwood Hall both have higher playoff seeds than the Cardinals and host first-round matches.

Hammond welcomes Hilton Head Christian to Edens Stadium, while Heathwood Hall hosts Ashley Hall in tonight’s playoff openers. Cardinal Newman travels to Pinewood Prep and Ben Lippen plays at Porter-Gaud.
