Lower Richland’s girls track team enjoyed its best state meet showing in at least 15 year at last weekend’s Class 3A season finale at Harry Parone Stadium.
With Imani Boatwright leading the way, the Diamond Hornet finished in third place with 53 points. It was the finish in the team standings for LR since a runner-up effort in 4A in 1997 and the 53 points was the highest score for the Black and Old Gold since 54 points netted a 4A state title in 1995.
Boatwright led the way with medals – one gold, one silver, one bronze. She finished first in the 800, was second in the 400 and had a role on the third-place 1600 relay team. Atira Williams chipped in a second-place performance in the 400 hurdles.
Dreher’s girls did not quite match the glory achieved by their male counterparts, but the Blue Devils had a solid, fourth-place effort, finishing one point behind Lower Richland.
Jazmine Manning and Maria Johnson were the key contributors. Manning was the long jump champion and joined forces with Johnson on the second-place 400 relay team. Johnson was the silver medallist in the 100.
Airport’s Brandie Sharber was the only other area entry to earn a medal. She picked up bronze for a third-place finish in the 100.
