C.A. Johnson vs. Eau Claire
Site: Bolden Stadium.
Game notes: C.A. Johnson took a 48-14 hit from Brookland-Cayce in its season opener last week. But junior Mike Knox had a big game – passing for 259 yards and one touchdown on offense while ringing up 11 tackles at strong safety on defense. Receiver Peter Goodman had seven receptions for 185 yards Eau Claire suffered a 33-6 loss last week to Keenan in its debut under new coach Tyrone Davis. It was the 13th straight setback for the Shamrocks.
Series history: The Green Hornets posted a 22-12 win last season to cut EC’s series lead to 18-16.
Pelion vs. Swansea
Site: Panthers Stadium.
Game notes: Swansea scored a 38-13 road win at Calhoun County in last week’s season opener. Travis Loadholt ran for 115 yards and one touchdown and threw a scoring pass. Jordan Chavis was 10-for-20 passing for 138 yards and one score. Terrance Salley had an interesting game. On offense, both of his pass receptions went for six points. On defense, he was credited with 10.5 tackles, 2 TFL and 1 sack and scored another touchdown on a fumble recovery and return. Jarrod Coleman (interception return TD), Josh Livingston (2 sacks) and Lance Hill (1 interception) also had notable defensive outings Pelion was a 46-22 loser to Ridge Spring-Monetta, turning the ball over five times. Isaiah Jenkins was the Panther offensive standout with 103 rushing yards and one touchdown. Mark Vucolo had a team-high nine tackles on defense.
Series history: Swansea smoked the Panthers 60-14 last season to increase its series lead to 12-8.
Calhoun County vs. Columbia
Site: Calhoun County Stadium, St. Matthews.
Game notes: Calhoun County saw two of its three giveaways turn into two Swansea touchdowns in last week’s 38-13 loss to the Tigers. The Saints are returning to Class 2A after eight seasons in 1A Columbia took a 14-0 last week to Wilson even though the game lasted just one half because of bad weather. It was the first season-opening loss for the Capitals in 10 years.
Series history: Friday marks the first meeting of the teams in 11 years. Calhoun County won the last two outings to pull even in the series (5-5).
Keenan vs. Lakewood
Site: Memorial Stadium.
Game notes: Titus Hopkins hit on 10 of 16 passes for and eye-opening 351 yards and one touchdown in Keenan’s 33-6 win over Eau Clair last week. Peter Easaw another big-play man for the Raiders with four catches for 210 yards and one TD and a 67-yard punt return tally. Linebacker Kendrick Gathers had a 69-yard interception return and a fumble recovery touchdown Lakewood is coming off its best-ever season (8-3).
Series history: The teams are meeting for the third time after splitting games in 2000 and 2001.
