Dutch Fork bounced back from last week’s loss in Kentucky with the help of Jordan Berry.
Berry made seven catches for 147 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt 59 yards for another score as the Silver Foxes dismissed Fort Mill 35-14 at Chapin High’s Cecil Woolbright Field on Friday night.
“We put our heart and soul in the Kentucky trip and put a lot of prep and a lot of work into it,” said Dutch Fork coach Tom Knotts, whose team lost 49-48 to Kentucky’s St. Xavier last week. “It hurt us to lose, but I thought we bounced back pretty good.”
Quarterback Derek Olenchuk finished the night 10-of-20 for 158 yards. Running back Walter Roberson’s team-high 83 rushing yards came on four second-half carries.
Never miss a local story.
Fort Mill looked to make a back-and-forth game out of it, but fumbles and missed opportunities plagued the Yellow Jackets (1-1).
“You just can’t do that against Tommy’s teams,” Fort Mill coach Ed Susi said. “You get opportunities like that, you’ve just got to make them. Special teams let us down. You make an effort all week in practice not to kick to that kid (Berry), and you do it. Hopefully we’re going to learn from this and get better from it.”
After stopping Fort Mill’s possession to start the game, Dutch Fork drove 73 yards on 14 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Matt Colburn ran in from 2 yards out at the 4:04 mark of the first quarter for the Silver Foxes.
It took a Dutch Fork flea-flicker to break a scoreless stalemate over five possessions.
Midway through the second quarter, Fort Mill went three-and-out. A 14-yard punt put Dutch Fork at the Yellow Jackets 48.
On the first play, Dutch Fork’s Tate Fant took the snap and tossed a lateral to Drew Williams on the right side. Williams floated the ball into the arms of a wide-open Jordan Berry, who ran in untouched with 5 minutes to go in the first half.
Fort Mill got on the board on the next possession. After a 45-yard Rylan Wells-to-Josh Lafoe connection, Deryan Sanders’ 31-yard TD scamper made it 14-7 Dutch Fork going into halftime.
Walter Roberson led the Dutch Fork offense going into the second half, catching a 7-yard pass and rushing three times for 25 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run that put the Silver Foxes up 21-7 with 7:55 to go in the third quarter.
Berry’s 59-yard punt return two minutes later put Dutch Fork up by three scores.
Wells’ 33-yard TD run with 1:16 left in the third cut the Silver Foxes’ lead to 28-14, but Dutch Fork closed out the third quarter on Trey Gregg’s 2-yard TD run.
“We let them score and let them make a game out of it,” Knotts said. “I gave them a good old fashioned talking to at halftime, and I think they responded pretty well.”
