Batesburg-Leesville vs. Strom Thurmond
Site: Panthers Stadium.
Game notes: B-L’s Panthers are off to a 2-0 start under new coach Jerry Brown, last week downing Brookland-Cayce 33-27 Strom Thurmond, which is back up in Class 3A this season, is off to a 1-1 start. The Rebels rebounded from a season-opening 39-35 loss to out-of-state Eastern Christian Academy to throttle Saluda 35-3 last week. QB Jauveer Hammond was 10-for-12 passing for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Darius Hammond had two touchdown runs and Tykim Brooks hauled in two scoring passes.
Series history: Strom Thurmond has ruled of late, winning eight of the last nine encounters with the Panthers to regain a 21-17 series edge since 1970.
Pelion vs. C.A. Johnson
Site: Pelion Stadium.
Game notes: Both teams enter with 0-3 records Pelion suffered a 54-26 defeat last week against revitalized Wagener-Salley. The Panthers were 27-20 at halftime, but the visiting War Eagles dominated after the break. The Pelion defense was hit for 455 total yards, 322 on the ground. The unit is allowing an average of 49 points a game this season C.A. Johnson is coming off a tough 13-6 loss to city rival Keenan. QB Mike Knox had 77 yards passing and 62 yards rushing and accounted for the lone Green Hornets touchdown. Tarik Pryor leads CAJ in tackles with 32 stops. Wendell Bing has 16 tackles and two sacks.
Series history: Pelion has won nine of the 10 meetings with the Green Hornets. CAJ’s only success was a 14-13 decision in 2002.
Daniel vs. Columbia
Site: Singleton Stadium.
Game notes: Columbia dropped to 1-2 after suffering a 28-6 loss to Dreher Daniel, the No. 3 team in Class 3A, rebounded from a season-opening loss to Easley with a 21-6 conquest of Greenville last week. Clemson commitment Jae’lon Oglersby did the heavy lifting – running for 132 yards and one touchdown on 37 carries.
Series history: It’s been 39 years since Columbia and Daniel clashed in football. Columbia swept the Lions in the only two previous meetings in 1972 and 1973.
Keenan vs. Calhoun County
Site: Bolden Stadium.
Game notes: The Raiders moved to 2-1 with a 13-6 win over C.A. Johnson last week. Quarterback Titus Hopkins had 88 yards passing and one touchdown throw. To date, Hopkins is 25-for-52 for 521 yards and three touchdowns ... Calhoun County, fresh from a bye week, is off to a 0-2 start for the first time since 2005. Worse, the usually potent Saints have scored only 13 points to date. CalCo was shut out by Columbia, 34-0, in its most recent outing.
Series history: Calhoun County beat the Raiders in 2000 and 2001 in the only previous encounters.
