Dreher rallied from a 20-7 third-quarter deficit to claim a 35-20 win against host Brookland-Cayce on Friday at The Cage.
The resurgent Blue Devils, who are off to their best start in 15 years, stand at 4-0. Brookland-Cayce closed out non-region testing with four consecutive losses and a 1-4 record.
“We didn’t have a lot of things go our way for a while, but our kids never got down on themselves,” Dreher coach Josh Stepp said.
“Perseverance. That’s what we’ve been preaching since we got here. I really believe that we can move the ball on anybody when we execute. Once we started doing what we were supposed to be doing, we got it going. This was a big win.”
Indeed, after the Bearcats scored two touchdowns in a four-and-a-half minute span midway through the third quarter to take a 20-7 lead, the Blue Devils shifted into high gear. Dreher responded with scoring drives on four consecutive possessions.
Keon Corbin’s 4-yard run capped a 35-yard scoring drive at 3:01 of the third and was the first step back. After B-C failed to convert a 4th-and-14 gamble, the Blue Devils moved ahead on a 16-yard scoring run by Hakim Frazier and a PAT kick by Wesley Mousseau kick with 26 seconds left in the third.
Dreher dominated the fourth quarter, cashing in a Bearcats turnover with a 72-yard scoring drive and putting it out of reach with a 37-yard march after the defense again turned away a B-C fourth-down bid.
Donovan Ward and Justin Daniels closed out the final quarter with scoring runs.
“The real difference was we started making plays after we fell behind,” said Ward, who had a game-high 135 yards rushing.
“It was a real team effort. The defense started making stops. The o-line got after it and the backs ran hard. We know we can move the ball when we’re on our game.”
The Blue Devils finished with 335 yards rushing, 363 overall. Dreher’s second-half rushing yield was 216 yards.
Both teams utilized three quarterbacks. B-C starter Zeke Walker suffered a wrist injury in the second quarter and did not return. The Bearcats still managed 176 yards passing, 328 overall.
B-C, however, was doomed by turnovers and penalties.
B.J. DeWalt was the Bearcats headliner, with one touchdown run and one scoring catch.
