Lexington pulled off a sweep at a cross country meet hosted by Ridge View on the state meet course at Sandhills Research Park on Wednesday.
The Wildcats boys dominated at the low-key mid-week event, and turned in a slightly better top-to-bottom performance (based on average time) than at the Coaches Classic race on the same course 10 days before. All seven of the Lexington entries finished in the top 11, led by Zack Langston and Tony Morales, who finished first and second, respectively. Blake White (4th), Erik Wendt (5th) and Thomas Harris (6th) rounded out the Wildcat scoring. Hunter Hanus placed ninth, but that was not good enough to be included in Lexington’s team score of 18 points.
Dutch Fork’s Chris Stafford kept Lexington from a perfect teams score (15 points) by finishing in third place.
Ridge View’s Sterling Jackson (7th) and Paolo Milan (8th) and Pelion’s Aubrey Hite (10th) rounded out the individual top 10.
On the girls side, Lexington had a little less drama on their hands than during their most recent Sandhills visit when a wardrobe misunderstanding nearly led to the team’s disqualification at the Coaches Classic. Eventually, the confusion was cleared up by a call to the High School League and the Wildcats second-place International Division finish was recognized.
There were no such issues on this visit to the northeast Columbia site. The five scoring Wildcats came across the finish line in a pack – Haylee Love (5th), Katelin Killman (6th), Meri Heneage (7th), Sarah Jennings (8th) and Bari Robinson (9th). Kaitlyn Keene was also in the group (10th), but it was not scoring worthy. Lexington’s winning margin was 35-57 over Dutch Fork.
DF’s Hope Whisman was the individual winner, followed by Claudia Cannon of Ridge View and the Pelion duo of Nevada Minard and Antoinette Fulton.
Whisman’s winning time (19:13) was the same she ran on the way to a third-place International Division finish at the Coaches Classic, while Langston’s (16:02) was 17 seconds slower.
The next major event on the Midlands harrier scene is Saturday’s Lake Murray Invitational hosted by Chapin at Crooked Creek Recreational Park.
Lexington, Dutch Fork, Irmo, Gilbert, Airport, A.C. Flora, Hammond, Heathwood Hall, Richland Northeast and Swansea are the other area entries.
