South Aiken came into its game against Dutch Fork the healthiest it had been in a while, with star quarterback Bo Baldwin and four offensive lineman returning from injuries.
That didn’t matter much, though, as the visiting Silver Foxes won, 56-3.
Baldwin struggled in his return to action for the T-Breds (0-7, 0-1 Region 5-4A), completing seven of 22 pass attempts for 61 yards and an interception. He rushed 10 times for 38 yards.
Dutch Fork (4-3, 1-0) returned the opening kickoff 44 yards to the South Aiken 48-yard line. The Silver Foxes moved the ball deeper into T-Bred territory, and Will Holbrook looked to have put a damper on the Silver Foxes’ drive with a 9-yard sack of quarterback Derek Olenchuk.
But the junior thenled his team deeper into the red zone and punched in a 1-yard touchdown run.
South Aiken countered with a drive of its own, helped by a 42-yard run on fourth and 2 that gave the T-Breds first-and-goal at the Dutch Fork 10. They settled for a 23-yard Owen Myers field goal, and that was all the scoring for the home team.
On the ensuing drive, the Silver Foxes scored on a 7-yard run by Trey Gregg to push the score to 14-3. Gregg gave the T-Breds fits all night, rushing 10 times for 95 yards and three scores and catching four passes for 73 yards.
Those receiving yards came mostly on screen passes that T-Bred defenders failed to cover, coupled with missed tackles.
At the start of the second quarter, South Aiken’s Matt Albertson boomed a punt that pinned the Silver Foxes at their 9-yard line. The T-Bred secondary, specifically Jordan Scott and Teddrick Steadman, stepped up, and that resulted in a three-and-out from the visitors.
Baldwin had the offense on the move on the following possession, but a Damion Brown fumble cut the drive short. Baldwin also threw an interception at the end of the first half with the T-Breds in the Silver Foxes’ redzone.
The Silver Foxes took a 28-3 lead into halftime after two second-quarter rushing scores by Gregg, and their passing game took over in the third quarter. Olenchuk found Daniel Jurgenson and Brigman German for scoring strikes of 13 and 33 yards and finished the night 17-of-25 for 284 yards.
Even the big score couldn’t keep the Dutch Fork passing game down. Leading 42-3 in the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Tate Fant scrambled and hit Jurgenson for a 35-yard touchdown pass.
Will Sweeper had the final score of the night on a 19-yard run.
Dutch Fork will host Aiken (2-5, 0-1) next week, while South Aiken is set to host Lexington (2-5, 0-1).
