WEEK EIGHT OF the regular season schedule is here and there are two huge battles of unbeatens that headline this week’s big matchups:
Strom Thurmond at Swansea: A matchup of unbeatens battling for top position in Region 5-3A. The Rebels are overpowering their instate opponents with a lethal offensive attack led by running back Darius Hammond. Swansea is running over its opponents as well, with a balanced offensive attack led by quarterback Jordan Chavis and running back Travis Loadholt.
Stratford at Wando: A battle of the unbeatens in Region 7-4A will be for a shot at the region crown. The winner will face off with Goose Creek, which is also unbeaten. The Knights are led by one of the state’s top quarterbacks, junior Jacob Park. The Warriors have been getting outstanding play from senior quarterback Christian Hart.
White Knoll at North Augusta: The Timberwolves ran roughshod over Spring Valley last week with a powerful ground attack. Their defense is physical and will be tested by a strong North Augusta offensive attack, led by sophomore quarterback Trib Reese and senior running back Devontae Pressley.
Richland Northeast at Blythewood: The Region 4-4A race is tightening up and the Bengals of Blythewood appear to be the team to beat. Led by running back Dean Beckett, the Bengals are productive on offense and strong enough on the defense. Senior quarterback A.C. Whaley is a great leader for the Cavs.
Byrnes at Gaffney: Big Region 2-4A matchup, with both teams 2-0 in region play. The Gaffney Indians have struggled on offense all season. The Rebels are lethal on offense with quarterback Shuler Bentley and wide receiver Akia Booker. Their defense is fast to the ball and physical.
Daniel at Emerald: This is a huge game between teams vying for the top spot in Region 1-3A . Emerald running back Osharmar Abercrombie rolled up 338 yards rushing and seven touchdowns in a win last week over Seneca.
Hartsville at Manning: Less than a week after the tragic event of losing a player in the game against Crestwood, top-ranked Hartsville travels to take on a 6-1 Manning team. Hartsville struggled on the ground against Crestwood but proved it can throw the football. Manning has given up less than 10 points per game.
Dreher at Camden: This is a significant game because the winner could end up with a third-place finish in Region 5-3A. The Blue Devils will be challenged by a good Camden offense, led by quarterback Josh Council. If the Devils can keep Council from rolling out, and make him throw from the pocket, they will fare much better.
Augusta Christian at Hammond: Hammond coach Erik Kimrey will go for his 100th win and Augusta Christian will pose a large hurdle. A.C. quarterback Tyler Robinson has put up big performances and is a threat throwing and passing. Hammond brings in one of SCISA’s best running backs and an offense that can move by land or air.
