Eight players from the Midlands were selected on Wednesday to the South Carolina roster for the annual Shrine Bowl all-star game.
The game pits the best high school players in South Carolina against North Carolina’s. The game will be played Dec. 15 at Wofford’s Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg.
Midlands representatives are: Alex Brown, TE, White Knoll; Byron Johnson, LB, Swansea; Curtis Bey, DL, Ridge View; Trahjare Reeder, OL, Newberry; Eric Gallman, DL, Newberry; Jonathan Boring, OL, Lexington; Darius Wright, DL, Irmo; and Ben Hinson, K, Irmo.
Six USC football commitments will participate.
Representing the South Carolina team: Dillon offensive linemen D.J. Park and Bryce King, and Goose Creek DL Gerald Turner.
Representing North Carolina: Charlotte LB Larenz Bryant; Havelock DB/QB Pharoh Cooper and Rockingham DL Devante Covington.
The game raises money for the Greenville Shriner’s Hospital for children and 21 other Shriners hospitals nationwide. The 2011 game raised more than $1.6 million and drew more than 10,000 fans. The game has raised more than $74 million in its history.
South Carolina leads the all-time series 41-30-4, but North Carolina has won two of the past three meetings, including a 26-19 win in 2011.
