Girls tennis state playoffs begin today

Region champions Irmo and Dutch Fork healine first-round play in Class 4A. Lexington and Blythewood also open as home as No. 2 seeds.

Class 4A state tennis playoff action starts Tuesday with six Midlands teams making the cut. The first-round slate features two all-area confrontations – Spring Valley at Lexington and Richland Northeast at Dutch Fork. Elsewhere, Region 4-4A champion Irmo hosts Rock Hill and Region 4 runner-up Blythewood is at home against Lancaster.

Irmo enters postseason play with a 14-2 overall record and a 10-0 run to the region championship. Along the way the Yellow Jackets had a second-place finish at the annual Hall of Fame tournament in Belton.

The Jackets’ lineup ladder features Isabelle Cooper (7-4) at No., 1 singles, followed by Ivey Westerkam (11-3), Sally Nguyen (13-0), Abby Cooper (17-2), Kelsey Murrell (10-3), Holly Reynolds (10-4), Gabby Smith (9-4), Keely Lassiter (8-4) and Caroline Lockman (3-0).

Lexington went 14-6 overall and 8-2 in Region 5-4A, which was good for second place behind Dutch Fork.

The Wildcats starting lineup includes Katie Thompson (18-6) at No. 1 singles, Amy Lance (17-3), Kelly Gajewski (4-1), Carley Neuberger (10-10) and Erin Lavisky (7-7). Madisyn Currie (13-6) and Mary Weston Lawrence (14-4) are set at No. 2 doubles.

Blythewood finished with an 8-6 overall mark, 7-3 in region matters. The Bengals starting singles lineup includes Abby Truitt, Mikaela King, Ellie Hoffman, Abby Hagood and Bailey Lee with Mary Braden Murphy and Jenna Kramer at No. 2 doubles.
