Tennis playoffs resume on Thursday

Four Midlands teams set for second-round matches in 4A, while action begins in 3A and 2A brackets.

The state tennis playoffs resume in Class 4A on Thursday, and the hunt for a title begins in 3A.

In Class 3A, Chapin and Brookland-Cayce open at home after securing region championships.

Chapin (19-1) went 10-0 on the way to the Region 4 title with a lineup featuring region players of the year Savanna Fuller (16-1) at No. 1 singles, Mary Katherine Dickson (17-1) at No. 2, Savannah Melonas (18-1) at No. 3, Ashley Bauer (14-5) at No. 4 and Katie McDaniel (12-3) at No. 5. The Eagles were also strong in doubles when needs, going 18-2 at No. 2 with Emily Head, Olivia Cartwright and Coco Huang sharing playing time.

Brookland-Cayce enters the playoffs with a 12-3 overall mark and a 6-0 ruin in Region 5. Individually, the Bearcats leaders include Madison Conwell (11-4), Brooke Smith (10-5), Kendal Scheller (10-4), Morgan Rowden (8-4), Sydney Broughton (9-4) and Savannah Sharpe (8-2).

A.C. Flora and Gilbert open on the road. Flora, which went 10-5 overall and, 8-2 in Region 4 matters, will trot out a singles lineup featuring Shelby Prince (7-7), Makayla Chandler (8-5), Emily Sandlin (8-3), Maia Blackmon (6-3), and Ginny Walker (13-1).

Dutch Fork, Irmo, Lexington and Blythewood all have second-round matches on tap today. Dutch Fork hosts Bluffton, while Irmo welcomes Easley. Lexington and Blythewood hit the road. Lexington plays at beaufort, while the Bengan are up against three-time defending state champion Mauldin.

Pelion is the line Midlands qualifier in Class 2A. The Panthers won the Region 3 championship, but is the No. 5 seed in the Upper State and opens on the road against Abbeville.
