The 2012 state meet on Saturday at Sandhills Research Park could be a memorable one for Midlands cross country teams.

The 2012 state meet on Saturday at Sandhills Research Park could be a memorable one for Midlands cross country teams.

Three teams are ranked No. 1 in the final coaches poll — Lexington’s boys and girls in Class 4A and Chapin’s girls in 3A.

The list of contenders for individual honors includes defending 2A champion Omar Sharif of Eau Claire along with Megan Stahlberger of Airport (3A), Tony Morales and Zack Langston of Lexington, Chris Stafford of Dutch Fork (4A) and Michael Lantz of Blythewood.

Lexington’s boys are heavily favored to become the first four-time Class 4A champion.

The Wildcat girls hope to get by defending champ Wando for their first title.

Chapin won back-to-back championships in 2A (1992-93) but never has finished higher than third in 3A competition.

Stahlberger, who was the runner-up last season, has one last shot at becoming the school’s first state champion in 39 years, and the first-ever female winner.
