Conway could be back in state football playoffs

As of Tuesday afternoon, Goose Creek’s 47-7 victory over Conway last Friday still stood. However, by Wednesday, the Tigers could be back in the Class AAAA football playoffs.

Several news outlets around the state have reported that Goose Creek has been disqualified for the use of a ineligible player. The Gators, according to those reports, have filed an appeal. If that appeal is denied, it would turn the Class AAAA, Division II bracket on its head, starting with Conway.

The Tigers would be re-inserted into the bracket and coach Chuck Jordan's team would head to Bluffton, the overall No. 9 seed for a second-round contest. That game would be played at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.

Bluffton (11-1) defeated South Florence 37-13 last Thursday in the opening round. The Bobcats spent the majority of the year ranked in the top five of the statewide media poll before falling to Summerville in the regular-season finale.

The decision is a huge blow to Goose Creek. The Gators were ranked No. 1 in the state, as high as No. 11 in one of the national polls and had won 25 consecutive games. That stretch includes last year’s Class AAAA, Division II state championship win over Greenwood.
