THE HILLCREST wrestling team traveled to Pennsylvania to compete in the Governer Milfin Holiday Tournament, taking on a tough field of 24 teams.

The Rams finished sixth, with seven wrestlers finishing in the top eight, including Ellison Sanders, who finished third at 170. Sanders is a two-time state 4A championship placer.

Camden won the team trophy at the USMC Seahawk Slam at Hilton Head High. The Bulldogs edged 4A power Summerville and 3A Eastside.

Niko Kolglakis captured the Bulldogs’ only individual title at 152. Lexington’s Jackson Miles won the 113 class.

BASKETBALL

There was plenty of basketball this week. Clemson-bound Austin Ajukwa led the Cardinal Newman boys to the championship of the Home Pest Control Holiday Classic at Heathwood Hall, pacing the Cardinals over Westwood for the title.

Dorman won the Bracket-I championship of the Upward Classic by defeating Georgia powerhouse Eagles Landing, 49-44. Dorman, whose tallest player is 6-foot-3, out-hustled the Golden Eagles, who average 6-5 in their starting lineup.

In the Bracket-II title game, Hillcrest knocked off Gaffney, 61-54, in a battle of Upstate powers. Hillcrest is ranked No. 5 in the SCVarsity.com basketball polls.

In the Lowcountry, South Pointe traveled to Charleston to capture the 35th Modie Risher Holiday Classic, knocking off Fort Dorchester in the title game, 87-61.

South Carolina teams were shut out of the championship game in the Carolina Roundball classic. Wando and Porter-Gaud each lost in the semifinals to out-of-state teams.

FOOTBALL

Hilton Head quarterback Michael Julian got an offer from Boston College last week and said he plans on visiting the Eagles in January.

Goose Creek defensive end/linebacker Jalen Stevens (6-4, 218) has offers from Arizona State, North Carolina and Southern Mississippi. He has other offers pending following his standout play in the North-South All-Star game.

Standout defensive back Darin Smalls of Summerville was offered by Clemson. The cornerback was one of SCVarsity.com’s top players for the 2014 Class.

Be on the lookout for my Class of 2014 “Early Watch List” coming up after New Year’s, featuring S.C.’s top players.
