This week in Region 4-3A basketball

Lower Richland can clinch No. 1 state playoff seeds on Tuesday, but the scramble for the remaining postseason berths heats up as the stretch run begins.

There is little suspense left atop the Region 4-3A basketball standings as the conference campaign hits the home stretch.

Indeed, Lower Richland’s girls and boys teams, who both stand at 7-0 in the region, can nail down the respective No. 1 state playoff seeds with wins on Tuesday at home against Chapin. The A.C. Flora boys and Dreher girls are both 5-2 and assured of playoff entry.

Otherwise, the scramble for postseason berths over the last three games of the regular season should be interesting. In fact, every other team in the region – boys and girls – is very much in the hunt, including first-year Westwood.

The Redhawks have suffered the usual ups-and-downs associated with young, inexperience teams. But Westwood boys and girls both stand at 2-5 in region matters and part of three-way ties for fourth place.

Dreher (3-4) is currently in third place on the boys side, followed by Camden (2-5), Chapin (2-5) and Westwood. Chapin (3-4) is the third-place girls team, one game ahead of Flora, Camden and Westwood.

Chapin’s girls have a rough week with dates against region powers Lower Richland and Dreher, but the Eagles stayed in contention with a sweep of Westwood and A.C. Flora last week. Junior ShaLeighya Sulton scored 18 points and eight-grader Makenzye Whitman added 14 in a 51-43 win over Westwood. The Eagles broke a 18-18 halftime deadlock with a 22-6 run in the third quarter. Sulton led the way again with 18 points with double-digit backing from another eighth-grader, Hannah Davis (11).

The Dreher boys scored a key 56-51 win on Friday over Westwood. Sophomore Tevin Mack was back in form for the Blue Devils, scoring 22 points. John Myers and DeAndre Nathaniel backed Mack with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Given the situation, every region game is important the rest of the way.

This week’s schedule:

Tuesday: A.C. Flora at Westwood; Chapin at Lower Richland; Camden at Dreher.

Friday: Dreher at Chapin; Lower Richland at A.C. Flora; Camden at Westwood.
