The Coastal Carolina men’s track and opened the season Sunday with a narrow 103.5-102.5 victory over UNC-Wilmington in the eighth annual Battle of the Beaches.
The Chanticleers had four one-two finishes en route to evening the series at 4-all.
CCU’s DeAndra Lipscomb (48.75) and Deion Wellington (49.68) were first and second in the 400 meters, Joseph Wilson (21.87) and Corey Hackett-Greene (22.25) were one-two in the 200 meters, Reggie Nelson (6 feet, 83/4 inches) and Cameron Griggs (6-23/4) led the high jump, and Jordan Roach (160-71/2) and Griggs (151-13/4) finished atop the discus.
Other winners for Coastal were: Joseph Keitt (200m steeplechase, 6:11.22; 3,000m, 9:01.04); Desmond Wallace (110m hurdles, 14.48); Matthew Lights (400m hurdles, 54.32); and Griggs (hammer throw, 177-61/4; shot put, 50-83/4).
CCU’s 1,600-meter relay team (Wellington, Wilson, Lights and Lipscomb) won with a time of 3:15.86.
• (At) Coastal Carolina 4, Western Carolina 0 | Kiana Quolas took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and finished off a one-hit shutout in a win over the Catamounts in the Coastal Carolina Invitational at Carolina Forest High School.
Quolas (5-4) struck out six and walked none in the second shutout in her last three starts.
Quolas, Brooke Donovan and Kory Hayden each drove in runs for CCU (9-10).
CCU men’s tennis
• (At) Coastal Carolina 5, Davidson 2 | Leo Christofides (No. 2), Garik Yedigarian (No. 3), Matias Di Pasquale (No. 5) and Hunter Whalen (No. 6) all posted singles victories.
High school baseball
• Northwestern 7, (at) Socastee 2 | Hunter Renfrow went 2-for-3 and Dalton Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the loss Saturday.
