Rueben Eargle has seen it all since starting the Gilbert softball program in 1991. Now, Eargle, who enters his 23rd season at the helm and sports a 329-178 career record, will oversee the move up to Class 3A competition.
“We know the competition will be tougher every time out, but we still expect to be competitive,” said the veteran Indians boss.
Gilbert is coming off a 25-6 campaign that saw it advance to the Upper State tournament finals.
Junior shortstop Jenna Williams (.400, 31 R, 21 RBI), senior second baseman Savannah Anderson (.336, 34 R, 20 RBI), junior Gabby Keisler (.404, 24 R, 28 RBI) junior Lyndie Dorgan and sophomore catcher Gibson Westfall (.430, 12 RBI) are the veteran foundation players.
Keisler and Dargan will again share the pitching load. Keisler was 9-4 with a 1.94 ERA last season, while Dargan checked in at 14-1 with a 1.85 EA and 72 strikeouts in 94.4 innings of work.
Gilbert opens the season against former 2A foes Batesburg-Leesville (Wednesday at home and Mid-Carolina (Thursday on the road) before diving into region play on March 12 at Midland Valley.
