Rebuilding Timberwolves off to 7-0 start

White Knoll

White Knoll improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 5-4A softball with a 13-6 win at North Augusta on Thursday.

Megan Anderson and Lydia Trexler led the attack with three hits apiece. Anderson slugged two home runs. Meghan Brantley and Kelsey Campbell had two hits each for the Timberwolves. Savannah Terrapin was the winning pitcher, upping her record to 5-0.

White Knoll, which was ranked No. 10 in the preseason 4A poll, opened the season with a 4-0, championship showing at the Palmetto Classic tournament. The T-Wolves beat North Augusta 6-1 in the championship game. Anderson belted another home run against the Yellow Jackets, while Trexler and Kristina Gartman chipped in with RBI hits. Terrapin pitched thee hitless inning to get the pitching win, and had relief help from Kelsey Campbell and Brantley.

To date, White Knoll might be a bit of a surprise, considering four college-bound players graduated and two other projected starters opted not to play this season.

“We have lot of offense we have to replace, but I’m excited about the chemistry on this team,” said second-year WK coach David Smith prior to the start of the season.

White Knoll went 20-10 overall a year ago, 9-1 on the way to the Region 5-4A pennant and won a district playoff championship before being eliminated in the Lower State championship tournament.

Seniors Savannah Terrapin, Lydia Trexler and Meghan Brantley, junior Kelsey Campbell and sophomore Megan Anderson are the veteran building-block players.

Terrapin won 12 games as a starter in 2011 before sitting out most of last season with an injury. She is the staff ace. Shortstop Trexler and third baseman Anderson were 2012 all-region picks. Trexler, an Erskin commitment, batted .430 with 31 runs, 25 RBI, 3 HR and a 1.231 OPS. Anderson led the team with a .451 batting average, scored 38 runs, drove in 24 runs and posted a 1.158 OPS. Campbell (.288, 12 R, 13 RBI) is back at second base. Brantley (.359, 11 R, 10 RBI) is at first base.

The newcomers in the lineup include sophomore catcher Kristina Gartman and junior Jeana Murphy, freshman Mackenzie Taylor and sophomore Caroline Bowen in the outfield.
