Lexington wins again at elite national tourney

The Wildcats nipped Cathedral Catholic of San Diego, 2-1, for its second win in three days at the USA Baseball National High School Invitational in Cary, NC.

Lexington continued its strong play at the USA Baseball National High School Invitational tournament in Cary, NC, nipping Cathedral Catholic of San Diego 2-1 in a consolation bracket game on Thursday.

The Wildcats (12-2) scored unearned runs in the first and sixth innings and the Dons, who are ranked No. 6 on the Maxpreps.com Xcellent 25 list could not break through against Lexington pitchers Matt Godleski and Elliott Lance, who combined for a one-hit gem. Goldleski got the start and surrendered an unearned run and one hit in 5.2 innings of work. The senior right-hander struck out walk and did not issue a walk. Lance got save by retiring four Cathedral Catholic batters he faced.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, CC loaded the bases after Godleski and Lance hit consecutive batters with errant pitches. Lance, however, averted disaster by getting he final out of the inning on an infield pop out and he had a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.

Ryan Brown’s speed turned into a Lexington run in the top of the first. The ‘Cats leadoff man opened the game with a single. He stole second base and scored on a wild throw by the Dons catcher as he was attempting to swipe third.

Lexington scored the winning run in the sixth. Catcher Nick Ciuffo led off with a single. Courtesy runner Brice Korven scored all the way from first base on a wild throw on a bunt by Zack Paquette.

The Wildcats have one more NHSI game on Saturday before returning home for Easter.
