Brian Hucks’ 301st career win netted Lexington its second straight Region 5-4A baseball pennant under the former Brookland-Cayce coach.
The Wildcats made it official with 8-1 win on Thursday over North Augusta. Lexington, the top-ranked team in Class 4A, now stands at 16-3 overall, 8-0 in region matters. Next up is an interesting non-region game on Saturday at home against A.C. Flora, the No. 2 team in Class 3A.
Lexington broke open a tight game with a six-run burst in the bottom of the fourth inning against the Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 2-1 in the top half. Cody Smith, Ryan Brown, Zack Paquette, Cole McMillan and David Barboza all delivered RBI singles during the move, and Dalton Addy’s fielder’s choice grounder netted the other run.
Paquette went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in.
Matt Godleski started and went five innings on the hill to pick up the pennant-clinching decision. The senior right-hander allowed six hits and no earned runs, striking out three with no walks. Glenn Daniels and Jordan Buster each tossed a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts out of the bullpen.
