Blythewood secures another 4-4A pennant

The fifth-ranked Bengals clinch their third straight baseball title with an 8-1 win over Richland Northeast. It was the 14th win in a row for the Bengals, who have won 32 straight region games since 2011.

Blythewood put the finishing touches on its third straight Region 4-4A baseball championship on Tuesday, downing Richland Northeast 8-1.

It was the14th win in a row for the red-hot Bengals (19-3, 9-0), who are 32-1 in conference play over the last three seasons. In fact, Blythewood has not faltered in region play since dropping a 7-6 decision to Spring Valley in the 2011 conference opener.

The clincher featured the hitting of Ricky Kernan and Drew Ellis and the piching of Andrew Beckwith.

Kernan went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs. Ellis was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Beckwith, who is headed to Coastal Carolina, allowed three hits and no earned runs in a sixth-inning stint that raised his season record to 8-1 and lowered his ERA to 0.27. Ellis tossed a perfect inning in relief of Beckwith.

Though the pennant is in the bag, the fifth-ranked Bengals will be out keep their region winning streak in tact in Friday’s conference/regular season finale at Ridge View.
