Airport clinched the Region 5-3A baseball championship on Monday. Gilbert secured the runner-up spot and a home date in the first round of the state playoffs with a 6-3 win over Swansea on Thursday.
The Indians, who finished region testing with a 7-3 mark, enter the Class 3A state playoffs for the first time with a 17-5-1 record. The defending Class 2A state champs will be the No. 2 seed in District 6 and open at home against the third-place team from Region 8-3A on April 26.
Gilbert spotted the visiting Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but gained control with a five-run burst in the bottom of the third. Mitch Spires had the big blow – a three-run double that turned out to be the game-winning hit.
Ryan Knowles, Jared Williams and Trevor Black all had two hits for the Tribe. Black drove in two runs.
Chris Hammond had two hits and one RBI for Swansea (8-13, 4-6).
