As about two-thirds of the baseball teams from around the state prepare for the postseason, the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association has released its final regular-season statewide polls.
While the preseason rankings are more speculation based on returning players, this list can be used essentially as a list of the teams coaches from around the state expect to contend for the four state titles.
In the process, the SCBCA made a big statement about Region VI-AAAA. Three teams, including Conway, were ranked among the top 10 in Class AAAA. Region champion West Florence was No. 2; Conway - which finished third in the region - was No. 6; Sumter, which swept South Florence this week en route to the second-place finish, rounded out the group at No. 7.
We'll have plenty more on the state baseball and softball playoffs in the coming days, but for now, the indication of the SCBCA is that Conway and three others from the area should at least be in the state-championship contention.

Aside from the Tigers, the poll also included St. James (No. 9, Class AAA) and a pair of Region VIII-AA teams, Aynor and Waccamaw, in the Class AA rankings. Aynor, which was edged out for the region title by Waccamaw on Thursday, is No. 5 in the state poll. The Warriors came in at No. 10. It's not exactly clear when the polling was done, but chances are there was some lag between some of the last region games this week and its release. Either way, the start of the playoffs will have an extra touch of expectation for a handful of teams.
Class AAAA, AA and A postseasons will commence Thursday. Class AAA, which will include area teams St. James, Socastee, Myrtle Beach and either North Myrtle Beach or Georgetown, will start a day later.
This week's poll:
2. West Florence
9. Boiling Springs
10. South Aiken
1. A.C. Flora
4. Belton-Honea Path
6. Union County
9. St. James
1. Bishop England
8. Silver Bluff
9. Lake City
1. St. Josephs
4. Fox Creek
7. Lake View
8. East Clarendon
