Spring Valley stayed alive in the Class 4A state baseball playoffs with a 4-0 win Monday at home against Hillcrest.
The Vikings (18-7) move on to the District 2 championship round on Wednesday at Dorman, and need two wins over the Cavaliers to qualify for the Upper State championship tournament. Dorman defeated SV 3-1 in the district semifinals on Saturday.
Chris Collins pitched a two-hit shutout to take the spotlight position in Monday’s elimination game. Gene Cone provided all the offense Collins required with a two-run home run in the second inning. For good measure, Chase Haas and Collin Trenery drove home insurance runs in the fifth.
The Vikings are looking to pull off a doubleheader sweep in the district finale and move on to the Elite Eight phase of the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
