Swansea’s boys and Gilbert’s girls emerged as the Region 5-3A track and field champs on April 24 at the conference meet hosted by Swansea.
The host Tigers used a dominating performance in the field events on the way to and easy 171-108 point winning margin over runner-up Airport. Three of the five gold medals won by Swansea athletes came in the field events. Antonio Hipps was the high jump winner, Robbie Brown struck gold in the long jump and Chris Hayes prevailed in the pole vault. On the track, Gerkedric Walker was the 110 hurdles champ and Swansea won the 400 relay.
Airport had six individual event winners, including a 100-200-400 sprint sweep by Patrick Jamison. Dorian Jones claimed gold in the 800 and 1600 district races and was on the Eagles winning 3200 relay team.
Omar Bethea (discus), Matthew Ligons (long jump) and Seth Darlington (3200) were the individual winners for third-place Gilbert.
The Gilbert girls need strong showings in the distance races and the field events to beat out Swansea by a 144-127 margin for the team title.
Nicole Biles was the Indians’ star sweeping the three distance races. Kari Adams (high jump) and Abby Bedenbaugh (pole vault) were the other Gilbert gold maedallists.
Swansea’s JoLyn Copeland and Airport’s Jasmine Felder were the other individual standouts. Copeland won the shot put and discus events, while Felder matched the three-event sprint sweep by her Eagles male counterpart Jamison.
