ACF's Gillespie comes up big again

Donald Gillespie continues to deliver in the clutch for the defending Class 3A state champion A.C. Flora baseball team.
The Falcons sophomore star belted a walk-off, three-run home run to stake Flora to a 6-5 win over Travelers Rest in the Upper State tournament semifinals last week, and delivered a game-winning two-run double to center field Monday in the bottom of the sixth inning of ACF’s 4-3 championship game triumph over Eastside at Falcon Field.
The verdict sends the top-ranked Falcons (24-6) on to the best-of-three state championship series for the sixth time under coach Andy Hallett since 2001. Flora hosts Airport in the first game of an all-Midlands set on Thursday.
Gillespie was the Falcons headliner, but Jake Lewis scored three runs and Madison Stokes had a 4-for-4 game with one run and one RBI.
Hallett employed four pitchers to close out the US tourney and avoid the need for a second game. Banks Cromer started and went four innings. Mills Carlton, Austin Beskid and Matt Wallace all worked one inning of scoreless relief. Beskid got the win, Wallace the save.
