Baxter: Spring Valley, QBs have good start

MANY questioned Spring Valley’s No. 9 ranking in the SCVarsity Top Ten Polls last week, but after routing Lower Richland, 48-8, on Friday night, it is difficult to argue the Vikings’ presence in the polls.

Irmo needed to improve on their 19 points per game average last season. They lost 21-17 to South Pointe. Irmo quarterback Demetrius Lewis was 13 of 22 for 143 yards.

Gilbert might be better than originally thought; they played a good Saluda team in a 28-21 loss, but were in the game until the final minute. They must protect the ball better at quarterback.

Richland Northeast was delivered a hammer from South Aiken, 40-12.

Around The State

Northwestern pummeled Gaffney, 51-19, behind a 260-yard, five-TD effort from Oklahoma quarterback commitment Mason Rudolph. He finished the game 28 of 37 but at one point he was 16 of 16 in completions. The Indians were without the state’s top player, Shaq Davidson.

Byrnes proved themselves with a 51-36 thumping of Florida’s defending 8A champions Apopka.

North Augusta routed T.L. Hanna 45-3. North Augusta quarterback Trib Reece completed 15 of 21 for 300 yards and four touchdowns, with no interceptions.

The Importance of QBs

Rudolph and Reece weren’t the only quarterbacks who had a big weekend.

Georgia commitment Jacob Park of Stratford threw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in a half at the Seratoma Classic.

Strom Thurmond’s Jauveer Hammond was 7 of 8 with 95 yards and rushed 15 times for 116 yards in a 31-15 win over Silver Bluff.

Marlboro County’s London Johnson was 11 of 17 for 160 yards and five touchdowns in the first half in the Bulldogs’ 43-21 win over Chesterfield.

Nation Ford’s Dalton Helms was 20 of 39 for 466 yards and six touchdown passes in a 57-56 win over Gastonia (N.C.) Forestview.
