New book details Spartanburg grid glory

Former Herald-Journal sports writer Jason Gilmer mines the rich history of high school football in the heart of the Upstate - from Woodruff, to Spartanburg, to Dorman, to Byrnes.

A book on the history of Spartanburg County high school football hits the shelves Thursday.

Where Champions Play: Spartanburg County Prep Football, published by Hub City Press and written by former Herald Journal sports writer Jason Gilmer, chronicles the rise to glory by the county’s numerous high schools with the emphasis being on the glory days at Woodruff High under legendary coach Willie Varner, the great tradition established at Spartanburg High, the rise to power by Dorman under Dave Gutshall and the elevation to national awareness in the new century by Byrnes.
