This week in SCISA football

Area teams looking to bounce back from a dismal 0-4 week.

Ben Lippen (0-1, 0-1 SCISA 3A) vs. Augusta Christian (0-1, 0-1)

Site: Hathaway-Weeber Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Ben Lippen took a 41-0 SCISA 3A conference hit from Porter-Gaud in its first game under coach Jolly Doolittle ... Defending SCISA champion Augusta Christian allowed 387 yards in a 33-13 conference loss to Wilson Hall.

Series history: Augusta Christian has won four in a row and boasts a commanding 9-2 series edge.

Hammond (1-1) vs. Orangeburg Prep (2-0)

Site: Edens Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: OP has blown by two SCISA 2A opponents by a combined score of 83-13. QB Marion McCurry was 10-for-11 passing for 254 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s 48-6 rout of Thomas Sumter. The Indians, who are coached by former Hammond assistant Adam Holmes, are sure to be motivated after losing by one point to the Skyhawks last season Hammond suffered a 42-0 hit against Charlotte Christian a week ago. It was the most lopsided Skyhawks setback since Erik Kimrey took command in 2004.

Series history: Hammond has won 11 in a row and 15 of 20 overall meetings since 1987 when OP opened after the merger of the competing Wade Hampton and Wellington academies in Orangeburg. Hammond was a regular foe of both teams from its inaugural 1972 campaign through its final season in the old SCISA organization in 1985.

Porter-Gaud (1-1, 1-0 SCISA 3A) vs. Heathwood Hall (0-1)

Site: . Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Heathwood Hall is coming off a 42-0 season-opening loss to powerhouse Christ Church. The Highlanders must do a better job of protecting the quarterback after giving up eight sacks in the opener Porter-Gaud rebounded from a stunning 62-49 season-opening loss to Palmetto Christian by beating Ben Lippen 41-0 in its SCISA 3A conference opener.

Series history: Porter-Gaud has won three in a row against the Falcons to pull even in the series at 14-14.

St. Joseph’s (2-0) vs. Cardinal Newman (1-1, 0-1 SCISA 3A)

Site: St. Joseph’s Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: The Cardinals dropped a tough 21-14 decision to host Laurence Manning Academy in the SCISA 3A conference opener for both teams. RB Zakki Parker has 162 yards rushing and one touchdown on 41 carries to date. QB Cole Halverson is 19-for-45 passing for 267 yards and three TDs. WR Stefone Brown has six catches for 152 yards and one score. Garrett McNerney and Bryce Spigner share the team lead with 18 tackles apiece. McNerney also is credited with three sacks.

Series history: St. Joseph’s was a 37-23 winner last season in the first football meeting of the former SCISA rivals.
