NORTHWESTERN’S 42-35 overtime win over Byrnes solidifies the position of the No. 1 team in the state. Points for playoffs are key, and this win was huge for the Trojans, especially if they have to move up to Division I for the playoffs.
Other teams on the rise:
Brookland-Cayce: The Bearcats, 4-0 for the first time since 2004, dominated Chapin in every phase of the game. With one game remaining before region play, this team is building momentum at the right time.
Spring Valley: The unbeaten Vikings (3-0) dominated Lexington and are beginning to get even better on offense. This team is flexing its muscles as the team to beat in 4A Region 4.
Dutch Fork: The Silver Foxes hit their offensive stride against Rock Hill on Friday night and played solid defense against a good Bearcat offense. After watching Goose Creek on Friday, I’m not sure even the Gators can match up with the Foxes, and it may be until the North Augusta game that they have their biggest challenge.
Hartsville: The Red Foxes have outscored opponents 181-9 and generated 441 yards of rushing yards on Friday night. Despite having one returner on offense from last season, this team appears to be as strong, if not stronger, than the 2012 title team.
Wando: With two losses, including Thursday night’s loss to Colleton County, who broke the state’s longest losing streak with the win, this team is struggling. They have good talent and they have good coaching but they lack consistency this year, more than likely due to inexperience in key positions.
Swansea: The Tigers were off this past week, but their loss to Chapin, coupled with Chapin’s loss to Brookland-Cayce, raises questions about the Tigers’ defense and how well they will fair against the offensive-minded teams of Region 5, Strom Thurmond, B-C, and Gilbert.
Gaffney: The Indians (2-2) dropped another game, to a quality team in York. If this team doesn’t solve its defensive woes, it could finish with six losses.
Zeke Walker, QB, Brookland-Cayce: Came through big for the Bearcats, passing for two touchdowns and running for two scores in a 35-14 win over Chapin.
Christian Miller, LB, Spring Valley: Led the Vikings with 19 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two QB sacks in win over Lexington.
Derek Olenchuk, QB, Dutch Fork: Passed for 327 yards and five touchdowns in Silver Foxes’ win over Rock Hill.
Calev Grubbs, WR, White Knoll: Had three touchdown receptions in 55-34 road win over Carolina Forest.
