River Bluff’s D.J. Ledell is a four-time state champion in the triple jump. On Saturday, he became a champion on the national level.
Ledell won the triple jump at the 19th annual New Balance Nationals on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. New Balance is one of the most prestigious events in country best high school track and field athletes.
Ledell won the event with a personal-best jump of 50-6. It was the first time he eclipsed the 50-foot mark in his high school career.
The Clemson signee finished ahead of Baylor signee Jalen Seals, who finished with a 50-4 ¾.
"It’s an incredible accomplishment," Ledell said. "Not only did I represent my family and the people who pushed me but the whole state of South Carolina. No one would have thought it would a kid from South Carolina coming out of nowhere winning the national title. I’m truly blessed and thank God for the experience.”
Ledell won the long jump and triple jump in the South Carolina High School League state meet in May. He also won the Class 4A triple jump in 2015-16 and Class 3A in 2014.
