In a dark moment with its season on the line Friday night against Wren, Chapin turned where it usually does: quarterback Logan Bailey.
The powerful runner put on a show, leading the Eagles from an 11-point deficit in the second quarter to a 42-30 victory against Wren (7-5) in the Class 3A playoffs.
Chapin (11-1) advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will host Union County next week.
Bailey, who had 401 total yards, played well in the first half, but his team needed a bit more, and he scored the first three touchdowns of the second half.
Never miss a local story.
“The coaches just said, ‘Look, we’re going to look at you, we need you.’” Bailey said. “I said, ‘I got you.’”
When Bailey ran for 65 of his team’s 78 yards on a go-ahead drive following two Eagles defensive stops inside the Chapin 30.
Logan Bailey: The Chapin quarterback did just about everything. He ran for 175 of his 253 rushing yards in the second half, threw for 148 and scored six total touchdowns.
Jay Urich: Although he scuffled to a 15-for-33 passing day, the Hurricanes’ signal caller had his team ahead in the first half with 120 of his 145 rushing yards.
Bailey Rogers: The Hurricanes’ top target pulled in seven passes for 117 yards, and also had a 63-yard punt return score in the first half.
128: The number of yards Chapin allowed between halftime and an 80-yard Wren drive with the game out of reach.
45.4: Urich’s completion percentage, down from his season average of 57.2 percent.
THEY SAID IT
“Ever since I’ve been here, it takes us a little while to adjust to other teams. We tell our guys all along, we can’t panic. We’re never going to hit panic mode.” – Justin Gentry, Chapin coach
“We missed so many opportunities in he second quarter and the third quarter. We had several chances to get some points because we did have good field position. ... I can’t tell you why, we just didn’t execute.” – Jeff Tate, Wren coach
