Golf: USC struggles at nationals
Worley posts best day for Gamecocks, who are 21st after tourney’s first round

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The return of the South Carolina women's golf team to the NCAA Championships did go as smoothly as the Gamecocks hoped Tuesday.
All five South Carolina players struggled and the team posted an 18-over-par 306, which leaves the team in 21st place in the 24-team field.
Furman, shot a 24-over-par 212 and is 23rd.
Southern Cal holds a five-shot team lead after an opening-round 4-under 284. UCLA and Auburn are tied for second.
In the individual competition, Wake Forest's Nannette Hill shot a record 5-under 67 on the University of New Mexico Championship Course. She leads five golfers by two shots.
Benedicte Toumpsin, who won the East Regional this month, struggled to a 4-over 76 and is tied for 77th in the 126 player field. Toumpsin, a sophomore, double bogeyed the second hole and bogeyed the third and fourth before steadying her round.
Bly Worley turned in the top score for the Gamecocks, a 3-over 75, highlighted by three consecutive front-nine birdies.
Furman was led by Stefanie Kenoyer's 4-over 76 and Jackie Hilea's 5-over 77.
