News of the day

Clemson conducted its two-minute offense for the first time this camp and moved the ball effectively.

But the Tigers were unable to cash in for points, as kickers Mark Buchholz and backup Richard Jackson both missed a straightaway field goal from within 40 yards.

“We set them up for success, but they both missed it with minimal rush and a good snap and a good hold,” coach Tommy Bowden said. “So that wasn’t good.”

Bowden again sang the praises of freshman running back Jamie Harper, offering that he was particularly impressed with Harper’s ability to recognize his pass protection assignments.

Stock rising

LB Stanley Hunter. Hunter, a freshman goes by the nickname “Buster,” has appeared to find a comfortable home since switching to middle linebacker from the weak side last week. He worked with the first-stringers Wednesday, and while he might not unseat redshirt frosh Brandon Maye, it appears he could provide depth they otherwise lacked at the inside linebacker position.

Stock falling

G David Smith. The redshirt freshman, expected to corral the starting left guard job, instead seems a visitor to line coach Brad Scott’s doghouse. Scott has challenged Smith publicly, but Smith’s main problem is he moves too quickly for his own good and winds up out of position.

Quote of the day

“We’re making some progress, but it’s not coming in big leaps.” — Bowden, on the offensive line

Injury report

Offensive guard Jamarcus Grant (jaw, ankle) has practiced on a limited basis. Reserve defensive tackle Antwon Murchison has returned from a knee injury.
