TALK BACK: At least Mom gets my jokes

Let me send out a big salute to my mom here on Mother’s Day weekend. My wonderful mother always supported me and helped shape me into what I am today — a fourth-rate columnist at a third-rate newspaper. Or is it a third-rate columnist at a fourth-rate newspaper?

  • Talk: Carve it in stone: The four great rockers

Everybody knows about Mount Rushmore, right? At least I hope all of you were awake in history class that day. Mount Rushmore, of course, is the iconic national monument that features the faces of four of this country’s greatest presidents — George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt — carved into the Black Hills of South Dakota. Now I’m not altogether sure why these guys got the nod over, say, Millard Fillmore or Rutherford...- 5:18 PM

  • Talk: Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack

My favorite song celebrates a big birthday Friday. No, not “Born to Run.” It’s that other classic tune — “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” which turns 100 after first being published May 2, 1908.- 5:17 PM

  • TALK BACK: Minimally proud to be ‘minimally adequate’

There’s an Internet petition drive going around that asks state legislators to amend the Constitution to say South Carolina must provide residents with a “high quality” education.- 5:42 PM

  • Once again, it’s time to talk in the morning

Welcome back from our station break on WTAT, 87.5 on your FM dial, for the Talk About Town morning show. (Jingle plays: “It’s time to talk in the morning!”) Let’s go back to the phone lines. You’re on the air, Leo from Lexington.- 6:39 PM

  • Talk Back: You can’t beat this ‘awesome’ week

You’ve probably heard that Pope Benedict XVI is visiting the United States this week. Wednesday he became only the second pope to ever visit the White House, and after his address to the assembled crowd, President Bush stood up and proclaimed the following:- 12:16 AM

  • Nailing down a spot among the stars

Shooting begins the week of April 14 in the latest big-screen adventure to make its way to Columbia. So I did what any good neighbor would do and headed over to the State House the morning of Monday, April 14, to greet the cast and crew with an official Talk About Town welcome.- 6:35 PM

  • TALK BACK: Taking a swing at this week’s headlines

Shhhh, quiet please. Don’t try to read this column out loud. Someone wearing funny pants at the fancy golf tournament 70 miles down the road in Augusta might be standing over a putt. And I wouldn’t want to be responsible for anyone shanking a putt. Or putting a shank.- 7:01 PM

  • Can you describe Columbia in 6 words?

Six words about Columbia. That’s what I asked for, and that’s what you gave me. The idea came from a book titled, “Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous & Obscure,” compiled by SMITH magazine.- 7:18 PM

  • Talk Back | Beer and basketball: What a great week!

Sure, Sunday beer sales are coming to Columbia, but the week’s biggest news involves another arrival in town: New USC men’s basketball coach Darrin Horn is making his way from Western Kentucky University, which, to the best of my understanding, is somewhere in the western part of Kentucky. Hey, welcome to Central South Carolina, coach.- 11:29 PM

  • Putting the city’s important issues on the ballot

The city of Columbia elections take place April 1, which means upwards of hundreds of people might head to the polls. You might not realize that so few people normally vote in city elections; Mayor Bob won his last four-year term by getting only 276 votes, although he still managed to win in a landslide.- 6:40 PM
