1979 Yacht Rock Classic Became a No.1 Crossover Hit After a Career Slump

By the mid-1970s, the popular music duo Captain & Tennille was in a bit of a slump. While having reached the top with hits like "Love Will Keep Us Together," they hit a snag and made some changes to release their second No. 1 hit.

"Do That To Me One More Time" was released in late 1979 when the sensuous soft pop genre was at an all-time high. The track became their 13th charting hit and was released as a single before being included in their album Make Your Move. What gained attention wasn't only the track's infectious sound, but its lyrics, written by Toni Tennille.

At the time, the music duo had fallen from the high of their previous hits and were looking for something different. According to American Songwriter, they signed with Casablanca Records, which housed an array of artists from KISS to Donna Summer. They originally didn't expect "Do That To Me One More Time" to catch any interest, but it did with the record label's head, Neil Bogart. After listening to it once, he knew it would be their first hit with the label.

The soft rock track became just what Captain & Tennille needed to hit the top again as it landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Despite losing its ranking a week later, it remained on the chart for a solid 27 weeks. "Do That To Me One More Time" ended up being a crossover hit after landing on the adult contemporary and R&B charts.

Despite the track's charting success, the thrill was short-lived, and it became the duo's last radio smash. As a result of failing to get another hit with Casablanca, their contract wasn't renewed, and the duo shifted gears to live performances.

When it came to the song's lyrics, many caught on to its sexual theme. According to Billboard's list of some of the sexiest tracks, Tennille admitted it was about sex and "male virility." She would admit, years after the duo divorced, that Daryl Dragon never actually paid attention to the lyrics and had no idea what it was really about. Interestingly, "Do That To Me One More Time" was also recorded by the duo in Spanish.
