After a dominant season on “The Amazing Race,” Columbia dentists Jim and Misti Raman came in second place on the reality show’s 25th season finale. The couple overcame a third-place start in a pack of four final teams and finished shortly after scientists Maya Warren and Amy DeJong of Madison, Wis., who won the $1 million prize.
The couple, who live and practice in the Irmo area, had no regrets about taking on the 26,000-mile race, which aired on WLTX. “Outside marrying each other and having children, it’s the best decision we have ever made,” Misti Raman said to host Phil Keoghan shortly after they reached the finish line in Los Angeles.
Jim and Misti Raman were tough competitors throughout the season, finishing first in five of the first 11 legs of the race, taking home prizes including luxury vacations and the show’s first-ever “save” pass, which would have saved them from elimination had they come in last on an elimination leg. They also had the highest average finishing place of all 12 teams for the first 11 legs.
The couple, who have been together for 15 years and have two children, credit their communication skills and strong relationship for their success on the reality competition, even more than their extensive pre-race preparation. Jim and Misti Raman both watched nearly every episode of the series and took notes on team’s strategies that seemed most effective.
“A lot of it is our lives leading up to this point,” Jim Raman said about what gave him and his wife the competitive edge. “Me and Misti have been together for over 15 years. Communication is important; we’ve seen other teams struggle with that.” The Ramans were no stranger to competition before “The Amazing Race.” Misti Raman is a veteran beauty pageant contestant, winning titles including Mrs. Galaxy 2013. Jim Raman has been a competitive bodybuilder for years.
Each have their own dental practice in Irmo. Jim Raman practices at Raman Orthodontics and Misti Raman practices at Irmo Smiles.
"Nobody has had better looking teeth than you guys," said Keoghan when the two arrived at the end.
