Led by an Ohio native, the Gamecocks thump Ohio State in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, 24-7.

Appropriately, as the year 2001 began, it was all Carolina. What a difference a year makes.

USC was in the depths of a 21-game losing streak just one year earlier. This year, it was an amazing turnaround to an 8-4 season, and big bowl victory.

Troy, Ohio’s own Ryan Brewer ran roughshod through his home state team. Brewer grabbed Outback Bowl MVP honors by rushing for 119 yard and scoring three TDs.

The impressive bowl performance launched the Gamecocks into the final AP poll at No. 19.
