The drought was over! Carolina had won its first bowl game ever after losing in its first eight attempts.
The Gamecocks defeated West Virginia 24-21 in the Carquest Bowl in Miami. Things started out well for Carolina, led by first-year coach Brad Scott. WVU fumbled the opening kick-off, and USC made them pay as QB Steve Taneyhill hit TE Boomer Foster for a two-yard TD. Taneyhill’s 4-yard TD run late in the second gave Carolina a 17-7 lead at halftime.
The Gamecocks would not trail again, although a WVU TD with only 0:34 left in the game forced USC to recover an onside kick to secure the victory.
Taneyhill was named Carquest Bowl MVP, connecting on 26 of 36 passes for 227 yards. He had one passing TD, and also rushed for another.
