Today kicks off Homelessness Awareness Week. A newly formed organization called the Midlands Interfaith Homelessness Action Council will unveil plans to address the issue of homelessness in the Midlands.
Midlands residents are encouraged to gather at 3 p.m. today at Martin Luther King Park, 2300 Greene St. Attendants will hand out bags of toiletries to the homeless while people who have experienced homelessness will recount their tales. They will discuss the needs and challenges of the working poor and homeless individuals and families.
Throughout the week local churches will raise awareness about homelessness through prayer, sermons and lessons. Many organizations will host food/supply drives and soup dinners.
