KEY MOMENT: Two weeks, almost to the hour, after a two-run, game-winning homer against Tennessee in the regular-season finale, Reese Havens did it again. His ninth-inning shot off James Madison relief pitcher Kyle Hoffman was clearly gone as soon as it left his bat.
STAR OF THE GAME: Justin Smoak homered in his first two at-bats, a two-run shot in the first inning and a solo blast in the third inning.
POINT OF EMPHASIS: Blake Cooper not only needed to pitch well, he needed to pitch long. He did both. He lasted into the ninth inning, throwing 117 pitches. Cooper mostly saved the USC bullpen. Craig Thomas faced one batter. However, Mike Cisco, who gave up the tying run, warmed up for so long in the bullpen (he started throwing in the fourth inning) that he was unavailable for the nightcap against N.C. State.
