Former USC shortstop Reese Havens has signed with the New York Mets. The Mets announced the contract agreement Friday night with Havens, the 22nd pick in this year’s Major League Baseball first-year player draft.
Havens was assigned to Brooklyn, the Mets’ Class A affiliate.
Havens received a signing bonus of $1.4 million, according to sportsillustrated.com. The Sullivans Island native hit .359 for the Gamecocks during his junior season with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs.
Havens becomes the third USC junior to sign with the pros, after pitchers Mike Cisco (Philadelphia) and Will Atwood (Washington). First-round pick Justin Smoak (Texas) and second-rounder James Darnell (San Diego) have also said they hope to sign.
